Tata Mumbai Marathon 2024
Abandonment and maltreatment of children without parental care is a matter of grave
concern for societies across the world. According to UNICEF estimates in 2007, there are more than 25 million orphaned and
abandoned children and about 44 million destitute children in India.
Almost 2.6 lakh children are living in 7,000 childcare institutions (CCIs) in the country.
Orphanages serve as essential residential institutions to meet the diverse needs of children
who have lost their parents or have been abandoned. These children find themselves in
orphanages due to a range of pressing circumstances, such as parental death,
abandonment, severe poverty, neglect, abuse, and sometimes because their parents are
unable to provide for them.
Oftentimes, children in childcare institutions do not have access to nutritious food,
clean water, quality education and medical care.
ln collaboration Specialized Adoption Agency (SAAs)/ SAA- Child Care
Institution (CCIs), United Way Mumbai aims to provide stationery kits and toys for children aged 0-12. Through this project, we will be working with SAAs or SAA-CCIs because the majority of the children in their care have
been abandoned, surrendered due to poverty, have special needs, etc.
