World Wetland Day 2017
To commemorate World Wetland Day 2017, United Way Mumbai organised various awareness and educational activities at Thane
Flamingo Sanctuary, Bhandup. The activities included: Mangrove Clean-up Drive: More than 60 college volunteers tirelessly cleared over 2.5 tonnes of garbage from the mangroves. The garbage mainly comprised plastic, polystyrene, shoes, etc. The garbage collected was
transferred to the dumping ground with the help of the Solid Waste Management Department, S/Ward, Bhandup, MCGM. Mangrove Sapling-making Workshop: 30
school children made 300 saplings with the seeds of Rhizphora mucronata under
the supervision of an environment expert. The saplings are now being nurtured at the Mangrove Cell's nursery. Mangrove Awareness Trail: 22
students from Vidyalankar College, Wadala were introduced to different
species of mangroves and their associates, the root systems of mangroves, water body structures, flora and fauna of the mangrove ecosystem, etc.
In all, 112+ citizen volunteers and college and school students participated in these
activities. Additionally, over 40 officials from the Mangrove Cell and the
State Forest Department also participated in the activities.
