The 2008 Bihar floods were one of the most disastrous floods in the eastern Indian state's history. The Kosi embankment near the Indo-Nepal border broke causing the river to change course, flooding the surrounding areas. The flood affected over 2.3 million people in the northern part of Bihar.

United Way Response:

  • Reconstructing the lives of 5,000 flood affected people
  • Providing kitchens, balwadi, vocational training and health facilities
  • Providing toilets to maintain good levels of hygiene
  • Providing immediate relief to 40,000 flood affected people
  • Running community kitchens to provide 3 meals per day
  • Providing shelter to the cattle of the families affected
