Amar Seva Sangam (ASSA) is a premier Organization in the field of disability management focusing on rural areas across all ages and all disabilities, located in Ayikudy Village, Tenkasi District. Its approach is to establish a centralized resource center in the development of physically and mentally challenged. From a humble beginning in 1981 as a small classroom for five children in a thatched shed, Amar Seva Sangam has expanded to support more than 16000 disabled persons in over 900 villages in the four districts of Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin
and Virudhunagar. Its outreach is targeted at both children and adults. Amar Seva Sangam is a central resource center with all facilities under one roof for any disability and with large client base (Service Users) being catered through an innovative community participatory initiative called „Village Based Rehabilitation Initiatives?. This center has developed from scratch to about 45 acres of land now, with close to 40 buildings separately to cater its several projects for persons with disabilities where they have about 250 disabled children and youth in-campus and more than 750 day scholars in its Inclusive Higher Secondary School. In the last 42 years ASSA has very successfully implemented several bold and innovative
programs and received several State, National, International and other awards.

Appeal

Amar Seva Sangam is an internationally recognized, much sought after institution in the field of Disability Management & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in the southern parts of Tamil Nadu, India. Among various other successful programs meant for overall welfare of Persons with Disabilities, providing quality, affordable education to the rural poor and children with disabilities is one of our core programs. Our Vision is no child is denied schooling experience because of disability with a mission to provide education to children with disabilities in rural settings. Inclusive education is more important and is essential for children with disabilities to cope with other students. Siva Saraswati Vidyalaya is the name of our inclusive school. We started Nursery school in 1981 which was upgraded to Middle school in 1991 and then elevated to the status of a high school in 2009. In 2015, we have commenced our Higher Secondary school operations. We cater to over 715 students inclusive of children with various physical and mentally challenges. Our guiding principles are: Participatory classes with normal children, physically challenged and Special children; Provide Free education for Physically challenged and Special education including stay; Charge affordable fees for other children considering the weak economic background of rural parents; Focus on all round development of children with extracurricular activities beyond academics. Our School is committed to providing quality education in an environment that sees no boundary between the physically abled and the disabled. At the school and on campus at Amar Seva Sangam, the children are not seen as disabled, but rather as “differently abled”. Every effort is made to nurture both their mental and physical development to maximize their individual potential.
We are raising funds for this project through Tata Mumbai Marathon 2025 with a target of INR.50,00,000.

Project DescriptionThe challenges faced by children with special needs in accessing classroom education are significant, especially in many schools in India where they may encounter isolation and exclusion from other students. This can have a profound impact on their functioning and psychological well-being, influencing their personality and future prospects. These barriers persist from primary to higher levels of education in India. As a response to this issue, we established an inclusive school to provide quality education for rural, economically disadvantaged children with physical disabilities, allowing them to study alongside other students. What began as a small school with only a few students under a thatched roof in 1981 has now expanded to offer education up to the higher secondary level, with a current enrollment of 670 students.

ImpactIn rural communities, education costs are low, but the standards are high, resulting in an increase in disposable income for families. Completing courses successfully allows students to advance and eventually support themselves independently. Physically challenged children are empowered with higher education, which equips them for independent livelihood. As a result, there has been a decrease in child labor.
Many of the thousands of our students occupy good positions in life in diversified fields as Engineers, Advocates, Teachers, IT professionals, and other Government services.
