The Society for Human and Environmental Development (S.H.E.D) was
established in Mumbai in 1982 at Raj Bhavan.
The founder Ms. Begum Bilkees Latif, wife of Air Chief I.H. Latif (former
Governor of Maharashtra) initiated the work in Mumbai and Palghar
Districts. Ms. Begum Bilkees Latif visited the slums in Mumbai to identify
the needs of the community. Dharavi, considered to be one of Asia's largest
slums, was the first community explored by the Founder and she was
deeply moved by her experience. Despite the challenging situation, Ms.
Latif chose to organize meetings with the henchmen of Dharavi to reach an
agreement for the benefit of the children. Vocational training was initiated
for children and youth. Later the activity was duplicated in 4 more slums of
Mumbai namely, Kalina, Andheri, Sagbaug and Jogeshwari as also Palghar
(Saphale in 95 clusters)
Begum Bilkees Latif was awarded India’s fourth-highest civilian honor, the
Padma Shri in 2009 for her contributions to society. After the death of Ms.
Bilkees Latif, Mr. Maneck Davar was appointed as a President of the
organization.
S.H.E.D is working with marginalized communities with children, youth,
women, and their families. Over the last 3 decades, S.H.E.D has impacted
the lives of more than 2 million individuals through its various programs
and interventions. S.H.E.D engages in rights- based and need-based
approaches to empower the most deprived communities and facilitates
sustainable social change.
SHED has initiated interventions since 1982 in five centres in Mumbai and
one centre in the rural area of Saphale with women and adolescents
consisting of life skill education, counseling, and vocational training. SHED
is working with school-going children from slum areas by providing
remedial education support. This initiative ensures the delivery of quality
and value-based education, while also focusing on personality
development.
Currently, we are running these classes in Kalina, Mahakali, and Saphale,
reaching 600 slum and rural children. With growing demand from the
community, we are looking forward to expanding these classes to Dharavi
and our Jogeshwari center.

From Last 9 years, SHED has started a Remedial Support center for slum
students that addresses education, healthcare, and overall child well-being
in a comprehensive and impactful approach. Presently we are facing
financial issues. Inspite of lack of funds SHED is managing the expenses to
continue the program but we are facing difficulties to meet another
educational requirement for the centres who are not supported.
