CMCA is a 24-year-old non-profit headquartered in Bengaluru that is a pioneer in Citizenship Education in India. Our mission is to transform the young into concerned, thinking and active citizens for an inclusive and sustainable India. CMCA engages with young people at the grassroots in educational institutions (schools and colleges) and community spaces (libraries, skilling and learning centres), through experiential programmes that impart Citizenship Values and Life Skills.
In partnership with government and like-minded organisations, CMCA reaches 177,000+ young people in 15+ cities and 900+ villages, in over 2400+ institutions.

Appeal

The Government of Karnataka invited CMCA to run the My Library for a Better Me programme in Gram panchayat libraries, where children are introduced to a host of activities, by trained CMCA mentors. Projects to help improve the village are designed as Team activities.

Just as they choose books, children select from hundreds of powerful CMCA activity cards which build key Citizenship Values and Life Skills. The activity cards focus on self-development (resilience, goal setting, financial literacy, appreciation of arts and literature, etc.) and civic skills (gender equality, celebrating our composite culture, living in harmony with nature, working with the government to solve issues, and so on). The lives of thousands of children are undergoing a dramatic transformation thanks to the programme. CMCA hopes to run its programmes in more libraries in rural Karnataka and help transform the lives of hundreds more children.

CMCA has been successfully running the My Library for a Better Me program since 2021 , In 2023 we reached out to 9000+ children through 85 libraries in rural Karnataka . The feedback from the Government as well as from parents has been tremendous.
This year (2024-25) we hope to cover 128 Libraries in Ramanagara district. In order for us to be able to do this, we seek funding.

Project DescriptionMy Library for a Better Me:
Children visit the local library and access the “My Library for a Better me” programme through Activity cards that focus on Citizenship Values, Life Skills, Financial Literacy, Digital Literacy & Legal Literacy. Collective Action is encouraged through powerful projects, field trips, and campaigns to bring about change. Parents too are given an orientation to the programme.

Clubs Programme:
A CMCA Club comprises of a group of students from the 7th and 8th grade to spread awareness on democratic and civic issues. When a school signs up to this programme, the curriculum is delivered over a period of nine months at a weekly ‘CMCA Club period’ allotted by the school during its regular timetable. Rather than having the school’s own teachers deliver this curriculum, it is facilitated by a CMCA Educator, typically one of our committed volunteers.

Children raised more than 900 issues. Issues raised included securing drinking water, compound wall, fixing of toilet, start of a new bus route, and several other issues related to basic needs and rights of children which have been taken note by respective Gram Panchayat for resolution in phase manner. Reached 250 students through the Magic Box program in government school where students of grades 1-3 enjoyed learning through activities using instruction cards and props.
