In Mumbai, the City of Dreams, the economically disadvantaged often face a harsh reality. Migrants from impoverished regions arrive with hopes of a better future but frequently find themselves trapped in the flesh trade, in prison, or enduring the harsh conditions of slum life.

Established in 1994 by concerned citizens, Sahaara Charitable Society is dedicated to uplifting marginalized communities and individuals in need. Through various initiatives and programs, we strive to create a positive impact on society.

Over the last 29 years, Sahaara has honed Core Competencies in:

· Providing Remedial Education to children in red-light districts and government homes.
· Offering Holistic care through Education Hostels for at-risk children from red light districts.
· Reintegrating sex workers and prisoners into society.

From a modest initiative by a few volunteers, Sahaara has grown into an organization with over 60 staff members running seven impactful programs across Mumbai. Accredited by Credibility Alliance, Charities Aid Foundation, GuideStar, and Give, Sahaara is dedicated to catalysing positive transformation within the city.

Appeal

Sahaara Charitable Society works with the victims of commercial sexual exploitation in red-light districts and runs education programs for their vulnerable children who are prone to abuse, neglect and second-generation trafficking. In our work with the children, we offer early childhood education, remedial education, a youth mentorship program, and parent and community training with the goal to facilitate a better learning ecosystem for these children.
Through the education program in the red-light districts and work with the women, Sahaara also identifies the most high-risk children of female sex workers and admits them into Sahaara’s education hostels. Here they are provided with safe accommodation, wholesome nutrition, mental wellness and quality education. This is undertaken with the goal of offering a safe environment for their holistic development.
We work towards reintegrating their parents towards a lifestyle of safety and stability so the child can ultimately be restored to the family.
We intend to use the funds raised through TMM 2024 for these programs that work towards reintegration of CSWs, provides safe education hostels for the high-risk children of CSWs and provides end to end education services for the children in the red-light districts.

Project DescriptionIn Mumbai, there are hundreds of children who have been taken out of society and institutionalized. These children are in the Observation Homes as they are missing children who have run away from their homes due to abuse or in the Children’s Homes as they have no parents or their parents cannot bring them up. Like any other child, these children are in need of care, guidance and protection in their formative years.

Project Pragati meets these needs of the children, providing remedial and supplementary education to strengthen their academic foundations in math and languages. They are subsequently put through aptitude and psychometric tests to identify their areas of interest and strengths. The Children are also provided with life skills training. Through such interventions, Sahaara helps them fulfil their dreams.
To facilitate a better learning ecosystem for children in government homes through the Sahaara Remedial Education; and with training & equipping of Home staff; so that the children gain academic and life skills leading them to fulfil their dreams.
