About Goonj

For the past 25 years, GOONJ has been working to build dignified-sustainable relationships between cities and villages using urban surplus material. We believe that cloth and dignity represent deeper human needs that are often ignored. Cities have plenty of resources, while rural communities offer wisdom, hard work, and potential. Together, these can be used to solve big challenges.
We’ve set up a barter system where surplus materials from cities and the knowledge of rural communities are exchanged like currencies. This enables us to tackle different issues with a dignity-driven approach. Our work encourages people to give mindfully and share responsibility for solving societal challenges as equal partners.

Appeal

Our Appeal: Support in bridging the learning gap through Goonj's S2S Initiative

Our education initiative, School to School (S2S), aims to address the gaps in rural schools by using unused school materials from urban areas—not as charity, but as a motivational tool. These materials assist to solve learning problems by improving attendance, encouraging good behaviour, and raising awareness among children. We believe students should feel empowered by earning something through their efforts, not as charity.

Through the initiative, school supplies are packaged into School Kits, which include items like school bags, water bottle covers, and sitting mats—handmade from old, unusable materials like oversized jeans. Additional items like stationery, notebooks, water bottles, and lunch boxes are added based on availability. These kits are given to students as rewards for participating in activities such as creating kitchen gardens, improving sanitation, and engaging in other social projects. These efforts inspire young minds to take charge and create positive change in their schools and communities.

How You Can Help

We are raising funds to dispatch 5,000 school kits, with each kit estimated around Rs. 500, including logistics to deliver them to remote rural schools. Our goal is to raise Rs. 25 lakhs to make this happen.

Your support goes beyond just monetary contribution— it’s a step toward a more sustainable, equitable future. Together, we can bridge the learning gap and make a lasting difference for children in rural India.

Join us in making a difference—one school kit, one step at a time.

Project NameRural Community and Household Development
Amount Utilized (INR)899198
Project DescriptionCommunity Mobilization – A time-tested strength of Goonj, a tool through which decision-making is put into the hands of the communities. Each year thousands of community development projects are being taken up and communities are encouraged to work on their local issues on water, community hygiene, sanitation, access, local infra, water, plantations, kitchen gardens, etc. As sustainable solutions for livelihood, communities are engaged in development activities in the non-farm activity days and receive daily utility materials such as clothing, toys, footwear and other household essentials in the form of Family Kits as a reward for their labour.

Cloth for Work: With its time-tested model of involving communities to address their issues, Goonj initiated its Cloth for Work initiative in the Ranchi, Dhanbad & Bokaro districts of Jharkhand. Here, people work on improving their local ecosystem and in turn receive the family kits with dignity, instead of receiving help in the form of charitable activity. The issues of the communities have mostly revolved around environment, water, sanitation, etc.
