Blindness Elimination Programme – ‘Swasth Drishti Abhiyan’
Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital works towards eliminating curable blindness by providing free cataract surgeries to poor blind patients from rural areas of Bihar and Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Akhand Jyoti's team conducts eye camps in rural areas to identify blind patients, goes door-to-door in villages to make them aware, brings them to Akhand Jyoti's hospitals in its transportation, provides them with cataract surgery and arranges to send them back to their places after surgery. 80% of sight-restoring surgeries that Akhand Jyoti does are completely free to the poor. The purpose of the programme is to provide equal opportunity, alleviate poverty and enhance social capital in low-income geographies.
Girls Empowerment Programme - 'Football To Eyeball'
In its commitment to provide equal opportunity to rural girls and remove gender-based discrimination in a patriarchal society like Bihar, Akhand Jyoti through its ‘Gender Equality Programme’ provides free boarding, training and education to underprivileged rural girls and supports them to become qualified optometrists who in turn drive the blindness eradication programme. Girls enrolled in the programme are employed back in the organization after the completion of a diploma course in Optometry (2 + 3 years). Through the signature ‘Football to Eyeball’ programme, girls are encouraged to play football to build their self-confidence. While most girls play football for fun few play professional football and have already represented Bihar at the national level. The objective of this programme is to ensure that 50% of the leadership at Akhand Jyoti are women and to create social change agents who in turn encourage other underprivileged girls in the community.
