About the TMM and Official Philanthropy Partner

The Tata Mumbai Marathon, since its inception in 2004, has heralded a change that redefined the sporting landscape in India. This movement has unleashed the power of participative sport and has personified the pulse of Mumbai – a pulse that brings us together, no matter what the circumstances…#HarDilMumbai.

The landmark 20th edition of the Tata Mumbai Marathon is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 19th January 2025 and will be flagged off from the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.

20 years ago Tata Mumbai Marathon started, thanks to the love and support shown by the people of Mumbai, the government, and other stakeholders, it has now come a long way to become the festival of Mumbai, a truly endearing and resilient symbol that captures the vibrant spirit of our city.

The Tata Mumbai Marathon has become a foundational event for both, the city of Mumbai and the Indian sporting calendar as part of the broader movement of participative sport across the globe.

This World Athletics Gold Label Race provided Indian athletes an opportunity to compete with the best in the world and win laurels for India. Besides sport, the platform has been a silver lining for the social sector. Additionally, it has led to the development of a thriving ecosystem around the sport contributing to the socio-economic health and environmental sustainability of Maharashtra.

The Tata Mumbai Marathon has paved the way for a holistic approach to sports in India. From year one, it has instilled the importance of an active lifestyle and led to the popularity of the sport. Today, running is the fastest-growing participative sport in the country with 700 running events and 700+ run clubs. Over the years, the event has empowered women's participation with 30% of the total participants being women. Moreover, its inherent inclusive nature provided a centre stage for senior citizens and persons with disabilities to join the sport.

Over the years, the Tata Mumbai Marathon has assumed a stature of eminence as the largest philanthropic sporting platform in Asia. Each year, more than 300 NGOs participate in the event to raise funds for the work they do. Corporates and individuals use the platform as a way to give back to the underserved. Philanthropy through the platform is well-regulated and hence serves as an assurance to prospective donors.

Since its inception, the event has raised more than ?429.60 crore benefiting over 641 charities, with funds being used for causes ranging from arts, culture and sports to education, environment, health, human rights and others, making the platform truly cause agnostic. The 2024 edition saw ?72.39 crore being raised, shattering all previous records.

Procam International is an event management company and is committed to elevating and enlivening the professional face of sports and players. They have pioneered several sporting events in India and one of them is Tata Mumbai Marathon and they are the ones who organise this event end to end.

United Way Mumbai (UWM) has been the official Philanthropy Partner of TMM since 2009. As the official Philanthropy Partner, UWM enables participating NGOs to leverage the fundraising potential of the TMM and raise funds for their causes. UWM is responsible for conducting the due diligence of participating NGOs, accounting of all philanthropic funds and providing donation receipts with tax exemption benefits to donors for all amounts donated through its platform.

UWM maintains a digital platform that enables the participating NGOs to leverage the event through different mediums like Corporate Team participation, Charity Bibs for individuals, online crowdfunding, etc.

To ensure that the platform is an equal and level playing field for all participating NGOs and remains neutral, UWM maintains a high standard of transparency. Since there are limited running spots at the TMM, the fundraising opportunities against these spots are distributed equitably between the NGOs.

Potential donors are guided to make decisions by interacting directly with participating NGOs. 100% of the funds donated on fundraiser and NGO pages on the UWM website are disbursed fully to the NGO as UWM absorbs the payment gateway charges. This makes it one of the most cost-effective fundraising platforms for NGOs. The TMM 2025 Philanthropy Structure

NGO and Charity Bib Related Queries

Below mentioned are the key features of the TMM philanthropic platform:

  • 100% of the funds raised online go to the NGO as United Way Mumbai absorbs the payment gateway charges. This makes it one of the most cost-effective fundraising platforms for NGOs.
  • Almost 25% of running slots are reserved for charity, which are equitably divided among the participating NGOs to raise funds for their causes.
  • The platform is designed to leverage fundraising opportunities among interested runners, companies and fundraisers.

To participate in the TMM, all NGOs must register with UWM and complete the due diligence procedures. The registrations and due diligence incurs no cost to the NGO. By registering with UWM, NGOs also gain access to different funding opportunities possible at UWM. UWM works with over 150 companies on their CSR & employee giving.

Registration process is explained in detail in the Philanthropy Structure available on https://www.unitedwaymumbai.org/downloads/Philanthropy_Structure_2025.pdf

NGOs who fulfil the requirement of the documents as mentioned on https://www.unitedwaymumbai.org/signup-ngo  are eligible to register for the TMM. After receiving the registration request, United Way Mumbai conducts a due diligence of the NGOs. After the verification process is complete, the registered NGOs are listed on
Yes, all NGOs registered in India can sign up for the event.

No, NGOs not registered in India cannot participate in the event.

United Way Mumbai features all the registered NGOs for the event on its website non preferentially. TMM is a time when hundreds of individuals, corporates and donors visit the UWM website daily, as they look for causes and NGOs to support. Being featured on the website is the best way to reach out to these prospective donors, and raise the maximum possible funds through this platform.

The Tata Mumbai Marathon (TMM) offers diverse avenues for fundraising to benefit NGOs. While it is highly regarded as the epitome of distance running among dedicated runners in India, the event also brings out the festive and inclusive spirit of the city of Mumbai with additions like the Dream Run, Senior Citizens’ Run, and the Champions with Disability race categories. The TMM is a hugely popular event with more applications than the event can accommodate. In addition, a considerable percentage of running slots are reserved for charity. The Philanthropy Structure is built to help maximise opportunities for NGOs to leverage the event to raise funds for their causes. Various ways in which an NGO can raise funds are as follows:

NGO Pages, Charity Bibs, Individual Fundraisers, Corporate Team, Top-up Donations During Runner Registrations, Personalised Number on Bib, and Incentives and Grants

Fundraising opportunities are explained in detail in the Philanthropy Structure available on https://www.unitedwaymumbai.org/downloads/Philanthropy_Structure_2025.pdf

Participating NGOs can utilise as many Bibs as they require on a first come first served basis. Upon registration, each participating NGO will be assigned one Bib. They can convert this Bib to any race category they require until Bibs of that category are available with UWM.

Once an NGO secures a donation and uses the Bib allocated to them, a new Bib will be allocated automatically.

UWM sets a minimum donation amount per race category to ensure fairness among NGOs. NGOs can request higher amounts from donors. The race category-wise minimum donation will progressively increase and are explained in detail in the Philanthropy Structure available on https://www.unitedwaymumbai.org/downloads/Philanthropy_Structure_2025.pdf

Donating for a Charity Bib and registering for the Tata Mumbai Marathon are two separate processes. The Charity Bib donation supports a charitable cause and does not cover the race registration fee. After making a successful donation, the runner receives a voucher code via email, which allows them to register for the race.

To officially participate in the marathon, the runner must complete their registration on the Event Promoter’s website, https://tatamumbaimarathon.procam.in/ and pay the standard runner registration fee. This fee is required by the event organisers to cover the costs associated with participating in the race.

There is no upper limit fixed for charity bibs.

TMM is a highly prestigious and popular event in Asia, given the prominence of the event, only around 50,000 people can participate physically across run categories. The open categories close quickly leaving the only possibility to participate by supporting an NGO for the limited charity bibs they possess. Each NGO only has a fixed number of bibs in the event and can choose to raise as much funds as possible through them for their projects.

Yes but Grouped Bibs are exclusively available to NGOs that attained Privilege Level status at the TMM 2024.

On or before 30th September, any NGO who is utilising their allocated 10K & Half Marathon slaots may do so a minimum donation amount of INR 6000 against the normal INR 12,000 for the charity bib

Similarly, all Dream Run, Marathon, Champions with disability and Senior Citizen bibs utilised on or before 30th Sept 22 by an NGO may do so against an amount of INR 3000.

This is to allow an opportunity to NGOs who may not be able to raise higher amounts while the general registrations is still open to public.

Once all bibs from their 1st allocation are utilised, NGOs can request more bibs for the second allocation through their NGO dashboard.

Requesting for bibs doesn’t mean NGOs would get the bibs as second allocation will happen on a first come first serve basis and depends on the availability of the bibs with UWM.

Return of bibs from second allocation are not accepted, so NGOs should be very cautious when asking for number of bibs in second allocation.

Bibs that are neither returned or utilized by Wednesday 17th October, 2022 will be considered forfeited and a deduction of INR 1,000 per unutilized bib will be applied from amount (if any) raised by the NGO.

NGOs must return the unutilized bibs to UWM by emailing the bib numbers to bibs@unitedwaymumbai.org by the said date.

Every NGO that requires charity bibs, is required to pay a bib blocking deposit of Rs 1000 per bib up to a maximum of Rs 10,000 to United Way Mumbai while registering. The bib blocking deposit is taken in order to avoid bib wastage and judicious utilization across all participating NGOs. This bib blocking deposit is refundable, provided the NGO utilises all the allocated bibs by 18th December 2022. UWM will deduct INR 1,000 from the bib deposit for every unutilised bib. The NGO can also request fewer bibs or return the unutilised bibs by 25th October 2022 to avoid any bib forfeit. NGOs must return the unutilized bibs to UWM by emailing the bib numbers to bibs@unitedwaymumbai.org by the said date.

NGOs can choose to block fewer bibs initially and request for their remaining bibs by 25thOctober, 2022 to ensure avoiding bib forfeiture.

To submit a Charity Bib, an NGO must first log in to their account on the United Way Mumbai (UWM) website and access the Bib Manager. Once a donation is confirmed as successful, a voucher code is generated and sent to the runner via email. This code allows the runner to register on the Tata Mumbai Marathon website. The NGO can view and manage their allocated Bibs in the Bib Manager, request additional Bibs, and assign them to donors. The submission must be completed by entering donor details and ensuring that the required donation is received within three business days. If these steps are not followed within the specified time, the Bibs may be revoked, and the NGO may lose the chance to request more Bibs.

Once the NGO has submitted all of their Dream Run Group bibs, a race fee cheque in favour of ‘Procam International Pvt.Ltd.’, (format of which is available onhttps://www.procam.in/tatamumbaimarathon/race-categories/dream-run/how-to-apply), will have to be submitted to UWM. After UWM receives the required documents, NGOs will receive a unique Group registration voucher code and link.

A runner needs to pay the race fee while registering themselves. NGO can register the runner and pay the fee with their consent .

At TMM 2025, runners can upgrade either to a commemorative 20th edition Bib or choose a unique 6-digit number with personal significance, such as a birthday or anniversary. Available for all race categories, these special numbers bibs require a donation of INR 20,000 to an NGO of their choice via the UWM website. The Special Number Bib is assigned when you sign up on the Special Number Bib page and make a specific donation through the platform.

The charity bib donation cheque should be in favour of ‘United Way of Mumbai’

No, donations made directly on the NGO page on United Way Mumbai website will be considered as a direct donation and will not be refunded once made.

Interested runners can request Charity Bibs from their preferred NGO  listed on the United Way Mumbai website here.

NGOs can utilise their Charity Bibs by seeking donations for the same either through the online mode, (i.e., through UWM's payment gateway), or through the offline mode (via NEFT, cheques, and DDs in favour of United Way of Mumbai and sending them to the UWM office along with the Bib summary sheet).

Charity Bib submission process is explained in detail in the Philanthropy Structure available on https://www.unitedwaymumbai.org/downloads/Philanthropy_Structure_2025.pdf
UWM retains INR 500 per bib.

The race fees are charged separately from the Charity Bib donations because the donation primarily supports the NGO's cause, while the race fee covers the logistical costs of participating in the event, such as race organisation, timing systems, and other event-related expenses. This separation ensures that the entire donation amount goes to the NGO, while the race fees are directed to Procam International Pvt. Ltd., the event promoter, to manage the event operations?

The registration process for charity bib runners in the TMM starts with interested runners requesting Charity Bibs through the NGO's page on the UWM website. Upon a successful donation, the NGO allocates a bib to the donor using the UWM's Bib Manager. The donor receives a voucher code via email, which they use to complete the registration on the event's official portal. After paying the race fee, the runner's registration is confirmed, and the bib is collected at the TMM Expo. NGOs can facilitate meaningful interactions during the bib collection, further strengthening their relationship with the donors?

No, most of the time, the runner himself/ herself will find a trainer. The NGOs could also assist in finding a trainer. This has to be worked out with the runner(s).

To reward participating NGOs that make full use of the TMM platform, there are 15 indicators that translate into points for an NGO. These points determine the NGO's privilege level at TMM. The privilege level is not a rating of the NGO's work but reflects their level of participation.

NGO Privilege Levels are explained in detail in the Philanthropy Structure available on https://www.unitedwaymumbai.org/downloads/Philanthropy_Structure_2025.pdf

The race fees for the team members are separate and must be paid directly to Procam International Pvt. Ltd. when submitting the final team. Companies can opt for a split contribution, where the donation is divided between the NGO and UWM, particularly if the contribution is from the company's CSR budget. The corporate would also be required to provide an authorized declaration on company letterhead confirming the same for UWM to proceed with the registration process. As per the recent FCRA regulations, NGOs cannot disburse FCRA funds to another. Therefore, the FCRA donations must be made through split donation option only.

Yes, UWM can conduct workshops for corporates on basis of their request, together with the NGO they are supporting. Write to tmm@unitedwaymumbai.org

Yes, a company can raise funds without requiring its employees to create individual fundraising pages on the United Way Mumbai (UWM) website by collecting donations on behalf of its employees and contributing a lump sum to the corporate-supported NGO. The company would need to compile a list of donor details, including PAN numbers, and submit it along with the funds to UWM. Donations can be made through cheque, DD, or direct bank transfers, with the details shared with UWM for verification. This approach allows the company to manage fundraising collectively, bypassing the need for individual employee fundraising pages

It is not necessary for all the employees who participate to raise funds. However, participants are encouraged to make their run more than a finish line/ just a race by supporting a cause and NGO, and raising funds. As a gratification, as and when the employee fundraiser crosses each level they gain the benefits and privileges of the level.

An individual fundraiser in the Tata Mumbai Marathon 2025 can raise funds in three main ways:

  1. Online Fundraising: By creating a fundraising page on the United Way Mumbai (UWM) website, where they can share their appeal, set a fundraising target, and receive donations through a payment gateway. UWM disburses 100% of the funds raised online to the chosen NGO.
  2. Offline Fundraising: By collecting donations via cheque or direct bank transfer to UWM's account. The fundraiser needs to enter donor details on their fundraising page, and UWM will update the amount once the funds are realised.
  3. Direct Donations to the NGO: Fundraisers who achieve the "Change Influencer" level (raising INR 2.5 lakhs or more) can receive donations directly into the NGO's bank account. These donations are still counted towards their fundraising tally for the marathon, with a 1% retention by UWM on direct donations?

To submit an offline donation for an individual fundraiser in the Tata Mumbai Marathon (TMM) 2025, the fundraiser needs to log into their fundraising page on the United Way Mumbai (UWM) platform, navigate to the donation section, and enter the details of the donation (e.g., cheque, demand draft, NEFT). The fundraiser must then download and print a donation report from their dashboard, attach the cheque or DD, and send it to Campaigns Team c/o United Way Mumbai, 6th Floor, Mumbai Educational Trust, Bandra Reclamation, Bandra (West), Mumbai 400 050, India. Once the cheque or DD is realized in UWM’s bank account, the donation amount will be updated on the fundraiser’s page?

100% of funds raised online through the fundraising pages are disbursed to the supporting NGO(s). UWM absorbs the payment gateway charges to ensure all of it reaches the NGO.

However, for funds raised offline (through cheques / DDs / direct bank transfer to UWMs account), a donation retention between 0 to 4% or less is retained as per the fundraisers level.

Note: For employee fundraisers of registered companies, only 2% or less is retained as opposed to a maximum of 4% in case of general individual fundraisers.

You can also post your appeal on various social media platforms to further raise awareness and funds for your chosen cause and NGO(s). This is an activity where the fundraiser asks their friends, family and colleagues to support their fundraising campaign by donating to a cause close to their heart. Interested donors can visit the fundraisers’ page on UWM’s website and make donations through a secure payment gateway. United Way Mumbai will then transfer the amount the fundraiser has collected to the chosen NGO(s).

Online fundraising also makes it possible to reach out to and collect donations for a good cause from people outside of the fundraisers’ residing city/country.

These donations are still counted towards their fundraising tally for the marathon, with a 1% retention by UWM on direct donations?

UWM does not accept cash donations. However, if a donor insists on giving funds in cash, when submitting the amount to United Way Mumbai, we request you to issue a consolidated cheque of the entire amount favouring ’United Way of Mumbai’ mentioning the donor details in the donation report so that UWM can issue the 80G receipts to the respective donors.

Otherwise, they can use their foreign/international credit card to donate on your fundraising page. Besides, they can also send you cheque/s in favour of ‘United Way of Mumbai’ and you can further submit it to UWM with the donation report.

Keep in mind that foreign donors would not be able to donate due to the Indian government’s ban on sub-granting of foreign funds between NGOs under the amended FCRA laws.

No. Due to the restriction on the sub-granting of foreign funds under the FCRA laws, UWM will not be able to transfer funds to the intended NGO. Therefore, the online donation form would not permit foreign donors to donate. UWM can only accept foreign funds for its own projects.

With the right commitment, effort and fundraising plan you will definitely reach your target. However, there is no penalty for not reaching your fundraising target.

Once you create a Fundraising Page you can easily track donations online on your dashboard when you log in. Every donation received on your page will also reflect in the fundmeter against the fundraising target set by you, An alert mail also triggers each time you receive a donation.

All donations are eligible for an 80G receipt. The PAN number of the donor for donation is mandatory in order to provide them with a 10BE tax exemption certificate.

The last day of fundraising is January 5th February, 2025.

The money is accounted for at United Way Mumbai and then disbursed to the NGO(s) you have chosen to fundraise for.

100% of funds raised online through the fundraising pages are disbursed to the supporting NGO(s).

However, for funds raised offline (through cheques / DDs / direct bank transfer to UWM’s account), a donation retention of between 0 to 4% is applicable based on the fundraiser’s levels.

Note: For employee fundraisers of registered companies, 2% or less is retained as opposed to a maximum of 4% in case of general individual fundraisers.

To avail a bib for the Tata Mumbai Marathon (TMM), individual fundraisers who reach the top 1,000 across the Bronze, Silver, or Gold levels by December 23, 2024, automatically qualify for a Charity Bib in any race category, subject to slot availability. Additionally, all fundraisers who achieve the "Change Runner" status by raising INR 1.75 lakh or more are guaranteed a Charity Bib. These fundraisers can select their race category and will receive a voucher code to complete their registration on the TMM website, allowing them to participate in the marathon

Upon being eligible for a bib at various fundraising levels, UWM will contact the fundraiser for the privilege. Once the fundraiser agrees to avail the benefit, UWM will share a voucher code and a registration link to complete the registration.

Fundraisers who are not eligible for a complimentary bib will have to pay the race fees to the event organisers.

This is new and one of the ways through which your NGO can raise funds. When a general runner is registering with Procam, there will be a pop-up option that’ll ask the runner to donate and be a part of a great cause. The runner can select an NGO by searching the name. If the runner doesn’t have any pre-decided NGO, they can still go to the UWM microsite, and choose from a pool of NGOs cause-wise and donate.

In another scenario, if the runner couldn’t decide on an NGO but still wants to donate, that person could proceed with their donation, and in that case, the amount will come to UWM’s common pool for participating NGOs.
