We children from New Jagdish Nagar and other neighboring slums in Indore face many difficulties. For 2-3 months during Monsoon, we walk to school through waterlogged muddy lanes, remove shoes and walk through the mud, then wipe off the dirt with our hands, wear shoes and walk to school, where our feet remain dirty. Our newly settled colony is considered “illegal” by authorities. Still the continued efforts of our basti‘s women groups with UHRC’s support have resulted in a small part of street in our colony has been paved about one year back. My school has less facilities, activities and we are confined within them. There is no arrangement for playing. I enjoy a lot to being a member of New Star children group. I am able to read interesting books through mobile library and got opportunity to be aware about different parts of Indore city while perform skits. UHRC’s activities help children and youth improve knowledge and sharpen our skills and confidence in performing and speaking before large audience. With guidance from UHRC, children-youth groups have been formed each with a girl and a boy leader. UHRC organizes activities such awareness rallies, sports days, group-songs, nukkad natak by children’s group members and poetry recitation on various themes ( social issue) and dance. These activities enhance our confidence and self expression. By ourselves thinking about different aspects of organizing activities we acquire organizing skills, team-skills and develop leadership.
