About Me
Hello, I'm Ganeshri, an HR professional driven by a passion for working with people.
United Way Mumbai’s project Saksham has been supporting members from LGBTQIA+ community and women from low-income communities with the impetus they need to be financially independent. Through our interventions we have supported 3500+ beneficiaries to pursue vocational skill training courses and equipped them with tool kits to kick-start their own ventures.
In an attempt to reach out to more LGBTQIA+ community members, we propose to empower beneficiaries from LGBTQIA+ communities in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region with tool kits to start their own business ventures. Promoting entrepreneurship among LGBTQIA+ members is one of the ways to address the challenge of low labour force participation and supplement family income. While many of them possess the skill, the lack of financial resources and capital prohibits them from starting their own ventures. Therefore, in order to promote entrepreneurship amongst LGBTQIA+ members, beneficiaries will be provided with the capital support they need to start or grow their own businesses and generate a source of income for them and their families. Your support can make a profound difference in this endeavor.
Appeal
Discrimination against LGBTQIA+ communities are often considered through social, cultural, and ethical lenses. However, in order to gain a holistic assessment on the effects of such discrimination, these issues must be viewed as ones integral to economic development as well.
Available data on LGBTQIA+ communities show that youth are more likely to face barriers in earning a livelihood. It’s also harder for them to find – and keep – a job, pushing LGBTQIA+ individuals further into poverty. India’s loss in GDP due to homophobia and transphobia is estimated to be up to $32 billion, or 1.7% of our GDP. India’s LGBTQIA+ economy has therefore remained largely untapped, with numerous research studies showing it to have enormous potential. Improving participation LGBTQIA+ community members in the workforce would require improvements in access and quality of education, skill development and employment opportunities available to them.
Through our Saksham program, I see the potential for the LGBTQIA Community to pave their way towards financial independence. And hence, I appeal to you to join me in supporting this cause.
