THE NEED
Of India’s 99.7 million adolescents (15-18 years), only 60 million (around 64%) are enrolled in secondary and higher secondary schools. This number is particularly skewed against girls. Statistics show that only 1 in every 100 girls enrolled in school in rural India will make it to Grade 12. The reasons for the drop in enrolment and completion of secondary education are many and range from financial constraints, to school quality, to lack of sanitation, to family and community pressures. There is a clear need for projects that encourage and enable young students to continue and complete their education. A significant amount of this work must also be done with the families of these children so they recognize the value of secondary education. In addition, the students also need to be equipped with soft skills and additional coaching to prepare them for employability.
SOLUTION
This project addresses financial constraint and lack of support as key impediments in the pursuit of higher education. While education scholarships may be offered to any student in need, we recommend prioritizing girls who traditionally face many more barriers. The process followed includes:
