About NGO:
CHILDLINE 1098 is a national, emergency, free phone outreach service for children distress. Linking them to long term services for their care, protection and rehabilitation.
Every day we receive thousands of calls from children from vulnerable situations - children living on the streets, runaway children, missing children, victims of child labour and abuse, differently abled children, children in institutions or displaced by disaster, mentally ill or any child in a state of distress.
CHILDLINE is present in 210 cities across the country and has responded to over 21 million calls since its inception. During its first year of operations at Mumbai CHILDLINE received about 6000 calls.  Today  we receive about 20000 calls daily. Our mandate is to visit the child within an hour of the call and do the necessary interventions.
CHILDLINE partners with about 470 local voluntary organizations in order to intervene in the problems faced by children and to leverage local resources to put the children on the path of self development.
CHILDLINE also catalyses the various allied systems such as the health, education, police, legal, local self government etc. in order to effectively reach out to the children during their hour of need.

Fund Usage:

The main programme of CHILDLINE India Foundation is to run the CHILDLINE 1098 phone outreach and intervention service for the children of India. Children in distress can access this service 24x7 by dialing this toll free number in 210 cities across the country. CHILDLINE logs about 15000 calls daily from across the country. Bulk of the calls are from children living on the streets, runaway children, missing children, victims of child labour and abuse, differently abled children, children in institutions or displaced by disaster, mentally ill or any child in a state of distress. With the help of about 470 local voluntary organizations we ensure that the needs of these children are taken care of. Therefore we lay special emphasis on improving the 1098 service, expansion to rural spaces to reach more children, quality intervention and rescue operations, training of the social workers and staff, monitoring, evaluation and capacity building of the services to ensure the quality of the programs.

CHILDLINE also runs special projects such as support towards critical medical cases, up-gradation of shelter homes, rescue vans, child sexual abuse, centralized call response centres to enhance the quality and standards of call response.

Impact:
Shafiya hails from a poor family in Mumbai.  She lives with her mother, stepfather, five sisters and two brothers. Shafiya had to drop out from the fifth standard to help look after her siblings. Her stepfather used to work but later lost his job and gradually began to seek escape in alcohol.
Shafiya's mother was duped by her friend Reshma Mohammad into believing her daughter would get to work better in Kolhapur. But on reaching Kolhapur, Reshma sold her for Rs.5000/- to, two other women who took her to the red light district where she was forced to become a part of the flesh trade. When Shafiya's mother couldn't contact her, she began a frantic search and called CHILDLINE Mumbai for help.
Shafiya was brought back to Mumbai on March 1, 2008 and was persuaded to file an FIR against the perpetuators. On March 02, 2008, Reshma, was arrested by the Investigating Officer. Later she was to Kolhapur where she assisted in getting the other two ladies arrested too.
Shafiya has given her 10th std. board exams. She is happy to be back home.
