Aligned to the following Sustainable Development Goals

Who We Are

SAJAG works with children from disadvantaged communities in Kalyan in imparting foundational skills of literacy, numeracy and social-emotional skills with communities and schools. SAJAG was set up in 2016, with the vision of bridging the information and opportunity gap that socially and economically marginalised students from the urban poor communities of Kalyan face. More than 40% of students in India drop out of school before reaching eighth grade and struggle with basic literacy, as mentioned in the National Education Policy. Through our projects, we aim to impart foundational skills in a child-centred approach to enable students and develop a curriculum using experiential theory and multiple-intelligence theory. Games, activities, theatre, and books are important instructional methods utilised in our curriculum. The curriculum is imparted in the following three projects: -
1. Vidyasadan – a daily learning centre for grades 1 to 4 in the community- is an after-school programme.
2. EnRead Library – A space exclusive for children to explore books and games is set up in Kalyan town with outreach activities in communities and schools to spread awareness about the library.
3. Shala Sangati – A School Support Project –We closely work with 5 government schools, and the teachers and conduct sessions with children to improve their foundational skills. We aim to spread awareness about the methodology among teachers.

Raising Funds For

We aim to bring the joy of reading into the lives of underprivileged learners. At the homes of first-generation learners, there is little to no reading material available. SAJAG aims to bring the print world into their lives. This will help them to acquaint themselves with books and eventually allow them to explore and familiarize themselves with the wider world of knowledge through books, stories, storytelling, drawing, and arts and crafts. We work directly with children, engage with parents, and have a wider outreach with communities. Availability and accessibility of books are directly linked to motivating children to read. SAJAG aims to bridge this gap of accessibility and availability of books through the ‘Reading Enrichment programme’. Currently, reading is equivalent to studying. In our weekly engagements with children, we aim to develop the ‘joy’ of reading. Our weekly workshops will include storytelling, read-aloud, readers’ theatre etc. The aim is not only to provide books but also to help children engage with books. This is the first step towards setting up an active library. The funds will be utilized to enrich and enhance our library, set up pop-up libraries (a temporary library), improve our collection, bags to carry books, resource persons for conducting sessions, and materials for sessions.
