Drinking water is a major concern, especially in the Marathwada region, where reservoir water levels are down to 5% of the full storage capacity. The intervention time is very limited as the water levels are drastically dwindling everyday and resources are limited. Even though the Government has been supplying water to the region, the efforts are not enough. Not only is regular water supply a necessity at a household level, but the water also needs to be safe to drink. United Way Mumbai aims to supplement the Government's efforts and provide a supply of potable water to villages along with water filters for households, so that the water will be clean and safe to drink.

The recurrent drought has resulted in crop losses estimated at 17% in the Marathwada region, making it very difficult for the economically weaker families to afford even basic rations to sustain themselves. While the Government's Public Distribution System is providing subsidised rations, United Way Mumbai proposes to provide additional nutritional support through supply of Jowar, Lentils, Cooking Oil etc. to vulnerable families, with special focus on Nomadic Tribes, households without ration cards, households headed by single women, etc. Along with this, we propose to complement the local public healthcare system through preventive and curative healthcare interventions.
Response Interventions | Cost (₹) | Requirement | Total Support Required (₹) |
Ration Kits (Jowar, Lentils, Cooking Oil, etc.) | 2000 | 45 days for 3000 Families | 60,00,000 |
Preventive Healthcare (Heat Stroke Prevention Kits - ORS, Muslin cloth, Antipyretic tablets) | 120 | 3000 Families | 3,60,000 |

The existing employment opportunities in Marathwada have dwindled, with the drought badly affecting agricultural labour, sugarcane industries and other small scale industries. To help the locals, United Way Mumbai aims to provide alternative livelihood support, by promoting goat rearing in the region. The Osmanabadi breed of goat is a drought hardy animal and is recommended by the Government of Maharashtra as it is suitable for the region and has good milk yield. The breed also requires minimal maintenance, becoming a very good means of monetary support as it is an alternative source of income. With very low investments, goat rearing can be turned into a profitable venture for small and marginal farmers.
Response Interventions | Cost (₹) | Requirement | Total Support Required (₹) |
Provision of goatery unit (5 goats of drought resistant breed per family, training and market linkages, insurance, veterinary aid, equipment, etc.) | 45,000 | 190 Families | 85,50,000 |
