Apnalaya was founded in 1972 to help children living in slums towards a better life and strives to achieve this through urban community development projects in Mumbai. Their main area of work is Shivaji Nagar, Govandi, with communities around the dumping ground: Rafi Nagar, Shanti Nagar, Padma Nagar and Indira Nagar with 9000 Households benefiting from it.

Apnalaya has key focus on the following:

1. Health:

Apnalaya focuses on physical, mental & social health of communities living in dumping grounds with activities like weekly clinics, Gynecology clinics, surveillance of families, mass awareness programs etc.

2. Education:

Last year Apnalaya arranged sponsorship for educating 470 children out of which 51.5% were girls. Their target children fall under groups: Working Children, rag pickers, children of widows and destitute, children of families where parents have critical illness, disabled children, and children of weak economic backgrounds. They also run their own Creches, Pre-School, and Study Classes.

3. Empowerment:

For developing self-reliance & job skills in women they provide vocational training like tailoring, mehendi classes, self- help groups, family counseling etc. Channel 4 UK has also chosen them as one among three NGOs in Mumbai to be featured in their 'Secret Millionaire' program.

Apnalaya particular has shown professional and emphatic approach to alleviate problems of people residing in some of the most downtrodden areas of Mumbai. They are addressing social through self-help groups which is the most effective way to ensure the unfortunate children of India see a brighter tomorrow.
